Carter Gordon eyeing return to rugby union for Rugby World Cup

Following in the footsteps of Mark Nawaqanitawase, Carter Gordon is also reportedly seeking a return to rugby union from rugby league.

According to Australian media, former key Wallabies fly-half Carter Gordon is poised for an imminent return to rugby union. His current NRL club, Gold Coast Titans, has reportedly agreed to release him a year before his contract`s expiration, after receiving a compensation payment of several hundred thousand Australian dollars from Rugby Australia.

The 24-year-old Gordon is expected to join the Queensland Reds, a move that would reintegrate him into the Australian national team`s considerations and give him the opportunity to compete for a spot in the squad for the home Rugby World Cup in 2027. Gordon made the switch to rugby league in 2024, where he played successfully in the Queensland Cup and made his NRL debut last season.

Gordon was the starting fly-half for the Wallabies under Eddie Jones at the 2023 Rugby World Cup. His potential return mirrors that of Mark Nawaqanitawase, who also represented Australia at RWC 2023 and, after a strong NRL season, is set to return to rugby union, likely signing with a club in Europe or Japan soon.
