Former All Blacks Manager Believes There Are More Suitable Candidates for Captaincy.

Darren Shand, former manager of the All Blacks, has raised doubts about Scott Barrett`s effectiveness as captain of the New Zealand national team. He suggests that the leadership role is currently hindering, rather than helping, the player`s performance.

Shand, who worked with the team for over two decades, emphasized that successful leadership is built on daily personal example and a strong connection between the captain and the head coach. He cited Richie McCaw, whose conduct in training set the standard for the entire team.

According to Shand, a true captain should lead by example, guiding others, rather than being forced to motivate them. This model, where leaders took full responsibility, consistently yielded the best results. For Barrett, however, the captaincy appears to be an overly heavy burden.

Shand also highlighted the exceptional leadership qualities of Ardie Savea, whose charisma and actions are reminiscent of Tana Umaga and inspire the team. Given this, Shand believes it`s crucial for coach Scott Robertson to strategically distribute leadership roles among key players.

Following their recent historic defeat in the Rugby Championship, the All Blacks are under immense pressure. The upcoming match against the Wallabies will be a significant test not only for the team as a whole but also for its captain.
