Leader ultras Galatasaray detained; nearly €1 million seized amid accusations against Justice Minister
The prominent leader of Galatasaray's main fan group was subjected to a police raid on Monday. This action followed his public criticism directed at the Turkish Minister of Justice, who he accused of having ties to the rival Fenerbahçe club. During the raid, authorities confiscated a firearm and nearly one million euros in cash and jewelry from his residence.
In a rather dramatic turn of events, Turkish media reported on Monday that over €840,000 in cash, along with gold, jewelry, and other currencies valued at more than €300,000, were seized from the home of the leader of ultrAslan, Galatasaray's primary supporter group.
During a search that lasted over eight hours, Turkish police also discovered a pistol, ammunition, and four bulletproof vests, according to news agencies DHA and IHA. Sebahattin Sirin, who was apprehended on Sunday, faces charges including black market ticket sales, disturbing public order within sports venues, and disseminating false information to the public.
Accusations Against a Minister Allegedly Wanting Fenerbahçe to Win
The head of Galatasaray's ultras had previously alleged on X (formerly Twitter) that the Turkish Minister of Justice, Akin Gürlek, was part of a "group within the State that wishes to make Fenerbahçe champion this season."
He stated, "Recently, rumors have reached us that a group within our State wishes to make Fenerbahçe champion this season, and your name is mentioned among this group," indirectly addressing the government official.
He then added, feigning innocence: "We do not believe this, and we do not want to believe it."
Galatasaray President Files Complaint Against Ultras Leader
Neither the minister nor the Fenerbahçe club have publicly responded to the accusation made by the ultras leader. Galatasaray, the reigning four-time Turkish champions and rivals of Fenerbahçe, have also not commented on the police operation at Sebahattin Sirin's residence.
While some supporters may question the timing of the police visit to the iconic leader, the judiciary has not confirmed the exact reasons for the police intervention. The Istanbul Public Prosecutor's Office has also not specified whether Sebahattin Sirin's arrest is linked to a complaint filed in 2024 by the Galatasaray president concerning allegations of black market ticket sales.
