After an arduous 303-day hospital stay, former IBF champion Ginjiro Shigeoka has finally been discharged. His brother, Yudai, shared that the family is now navigating the everyday challenges of rehabilitation as Ginjiro recovers from a severe brain injury.

Shigeoka’s extensive recovery period began ten months ago after he sustained an acute subdural hematoma during his rematch against Pedro Taduran in Osaka.

Immediately following the fight, the ex-champion underwent emergency surgery, including a craniotomy. Reports indicated he was unconscious and in critical condition, with early messages from Yudai emphasizing Ginjiro’s desperate fight for survival as medical teams worked tirelessly.

Yudai Provides Significant Update

Now, after spending over ten months in the hospital, Yudai confirms his younger brother is finally home, embarking on a new chapter of his recovery journey.

Yudai stated: “My younger brother, Ginjiro, has been discharged from the hospital after 303 days. I took Gin to the cafe (which was opened in his honor), and there was a child there, and family there.”

“I’ve been persevering until today, envisioning a faintly visible, happy future. We will turn all our tears into laughter. A new life truly begins from this point.”

“We still need to adjust Gin’s immediate environment a bit more. Dinner will likely be the biggest hurdle. He requires rice soft enough to be consumed with his gums, which presents a challenge.”

Regarding Ginjiro’s reaction to being home, Yudai added, “He’s been complaining about needing to use the toilet all day. I’m truly facing the realities of his condition, but despite that, I’m still incredibly happy.”

The Road to Recovery

This discharge marks the most significant milestone to date in Shigeoka’s recovery journey, following many months of uncertainty.

Initially, doctors noted positive signs of recovery, but his hospital stay was extended to allow specialists to meticulously monitor his neurological rehabilitation.

At one point, amidst circulating online speculation about Ginjiro’s health, Yudai felt compelled to share a video update confirming his brother was conscious.

This incident also ignited a broader debate concerning fighter safety. In response, the Japanese Boxing Commission announced modifications to title fight regulations following several similar occurrences, though many observers felt these reforms were overdue given the severity of Ginjiro’s case.

During this challenging period, Yudai himself put his boxing career on hold, ultimately announcing his retirement in the wake of the life-altering events of last May.

While Ginjiro’s discharge from the hospital doesn’t signify the end of his struggle, it undoubtedly represents a monumental step forward after one of the most severe medical emergencies witnessed in boxing in recent memory.

After enduring 303 days within hospital walls, the Shigeoka family can now finally embark on the process of rebuilding their daily lives together.
