Preview Geraint Thomas: Tour de France Winner to Retire from Professional Cycling

Geraint Thomas, a prominent figure in professional cycling and a Tour de France champion, has announced his decision to retire from the sport at the conclusion of the current season, marking the end of an illustrious 19-year career. British Cycling has confirmed that his final competitive appearance will be at the Tour of Britain in September.

The 38-year-old Thomas is a two-time Olympic gold medalist in track cycling, having secured victories in the team pursuit at the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Games. His most notable achievement in road cycling came in 2018 when he triumphed at the Tour de France, making him the third British rider and the sole Welshman to conquer the sport`s most prestigious Grand Tour.

Reflecting on a Legendary Career

Sharing his reflections on retirement during his podcast, “Geraint Thomas Cycling Club,” the veteran cyclist stated, “This will be my final year racing my bike. It`s strange; the thought has always been in the back of my mind for the last four years, but now it`s official. In seven to eight months, it will all be done.” He emphasized his desire to step away while still enjoying the sport and before becoming a “grumpy person on the bus.”

Thomas highlighted that he continues to enjoy riding, training, and improving his fitness, a passion since age 12. However, family considerations are now a priority. “My son Macs will turn six this year. I`m glad I`ve continued long enough for him to experience and remember me racing.” He also noted that the variety in his career, including track cycling early on, contributed to his longevity.

A Decorated Career in Cycling

Beyond his Olympic golds and Tour de France victory, Thomas represented Great Britain in four Olympic Games and Wales in three Commonwealth Games. At the Commonwealth Games, he earned three bronze medals (points race in 2006, individual time trial in 2014 and 2022) and a gold medal in the road race in 2014.
