The Hurricanes rugby team faces a significant setback as they will be forced to seek a new fly-half for the upcoming 2026 Super Rugby season.
Promising young fly-half Harry Godfrey has suffered a severe anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear during a recent training session. The injury mandates surgery and an extensive nine-month rehabilitation period, effectively sidelining him for the entirety of the 2026 Super Rugby competition.
Hurricanes coach Clark Laidlaw conveyed his deep disappointment regarding the unfortunate development:
“This is a huge blow for both us as a team and for Harry personally, as this serious injury rules him out of contention for a spot in the squad for the upcoming Super Rugby season. Last year, it was abundantly clear that Harry was growing and evolving into a truly valuable player for the team. Based on his performances this year, I believe it was evident that he was starting to truly mature. We are committed to providing him with our full support following his surgery later this month. I am absolutely confident he will return even better and stronger than before. We expect to announce Godfrey`s replacement and the full squad for next season very soon.”
The 22-year-old made his Super Rugby debut in 2023. Since then, he has participated in 15 matches for the Wellington-based team, tallying an impressive 60 points and rapidly establishing himself as a key prospect for the club`s future.
