Liverpool`s Recent Struggles Continue

Liverpool`s ability to mask underlying issues with last-minute heroics seems to have ended. The Reds suffered their second consecutive defeat on Tuesday, losing 1-0 to Galatasaray after Victor Osimhen converted a 16th-minute penalty. Despite outshooting Galatasaray 16-9 and generating a higher expected goals (1.45 vs. 0.52 after the penalty), Liverpool`s attack, spearheaded by Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz, couldn`t compensate for their defensive vulnerabilities, leading to a costly defeat in Istanbul. This persistent imbalance has plagued them all season.

The game highlighted several questionable tactical choices by manager Arne Slot that exacerbated Liverpool`s difficulties. Dominik Szoboszlai was deployed at right-back, a role usually filled by Trent Alexander-Arnold`s replacement, Jeremie Frimpong, who played further upfield—possibly due to concerns over Frimpong`s defensive abilities. This experimental setup failed, as Szoboszlai appeared uncomfortable throughout the match and was responsible for conceding Osimhen`s penalty. Furthermore, Florian Wirtz is struggling to adapt to Liverpool, likely due to being played in a different position than the one that justified his hefty transfer fee, thereby intensifying the team`s attacking problems.

This led former Liverpool defender and analyst Jamie Carragher to deliver critical feedback to Slot and his team during the UEFA Champions League Today post-match analysis:

`I don`t feel like I`m watching a top team. Liverpool aren`t playing football at the moment, they`re playing basketball, it`s end to end, and I don`t think top teams play like that. … They haven`t gained anything going forward, but they`ve lost a lot defensively. I think for the manager, last season was such a smooth ride for them, and he`d now got to really earn his money. He did last season, he won the Premier League, which is unbelievable, but he`s got a few problems that he`s got to fix, and I`ll be interested to see how he goes about it because he spent a lot of money on certain players, and right now, I don`t think that the balance of the team is quite right.`

Barcelona and PSG Set for Injury-Riddled Showdown

Wednesday in Barcelona will host a highly anticipated Champions League fixture, as La Liga champions Barcelona take on French champions Paris Saint-Germain. This clash between two European contenders will offer an early measure of their strengths, though it may not be entirely conclusive given that both teams are grappling with significant player absences for this Matchday 2 encounter.

Barcelona will be missing goalkeeper Joan Garcia, midfielder Gavi, and winger Fermin Lopez. However, PSG`s injury list is considerably longer. Ousmane Dembele, a Ballon d`Or winner, is out with a thigh injury, and he`s joined on the sidelines by Desire Doue, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Marquinhos, and Joao Neves, who are all projected to miss the Barcelona game.

Despite these setbacks, PSG manager Luis Enrique expressed confidence in his available squad during his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, stating he is not concerned:

Enrique: `That`s football, that`s competition, that`s reality! You have to adapt. I`m not worried, that`s football at the top level. Football is a sport where injuries are normal because it`s a contact sport. I`m not worried at all, and that`s the mentality that I want to transmit to the players and the fans. There are a lot of quality players at the campus. Everything is planned out by the club. That`s life, it`s normal.`

With Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, and Robert Lewandowski still available, Barcelona`s attack remains potent. In contrast, PSG`s extensive injury list will severely test Luis Enrique`s tactical acumen. Last season, Enrique revamped the French team, making his distinctive pressing system the focal point over individual stars, notably bringing out the best in Dembele. Now, he must rely on his reserve players—including Bradley Barcola, Goncalo Ramos, and Lee Kang-in—to replicate that success. Those selected to start against Barcelona will have a prime opportunity to demonstrate PSG`s continued strength in Europe, showcasing the team`s significant squad depth.
