Sir Mark Cavendish triumphantly crossed the finish line in his final professional cycling race.
The 39-year-old demonstrated his signature sprint to claim first place at the Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium.
Before the event, fellow competitors formed a guard of honour for Cavendish, and the Manxman was visibly emotional as the race concluded.
In a tearful interview with Eurosport, he reflected: “In the last five laps, I realized these were the final 15km of my career. I passed the `flamme rouge` (marking one kilometer to go) for the very last time, and it truly hit me.”
He continued, “I hadn`t raced since the Tour de France, so I lacked that sharp edge, and with the lead-out teams here, it was always going to be tough. But seeing the incredible work my team, Astana Kazakhstan, did to lead me out, I had to push.”
“I had to let Jasper (Philipsen) and Biniam (Girmay) through on the final lap, as I was anxious about crashing or something if I fought them. I genuinely just wanted to complete my last race.”
“I could feel the lead approaching, and when I overtook Jasper, I sensed his acceleration, but I wanted that win so badly. I am incredibly proud to have won the Tour de France Prudential Criterium as my final professional race.”
