Preview Ross Byrne Declares Readiness for Ireland National Team

Despite his eagerness, fly-half Ross Byrne currently does not anticipate an invitation to join the national squad.

In a recent interview with The Irish Independent, Ross Byrne confirmed he would gladly accept a call from Ireland head coach Andy Farrell. However, his transfer to Gloucester this summer has effectively complicated his immediate prospects for national team selection. By the time his contract with the English club concludes, Byrne will be 33 years old, potentially limiting his future international opportunities.

Irish rugby maintains an unofficial, yet consistently enforced, policy regarding players who ply their trade outside of Ireland. This policy generally restricts the selection of such athletes for the national team. Johnny Sexton stands out as the sole notable exception in recent times, having continued to earn caps for Ireland while playing for the French club Racing 92.

Byrne has represented `the Men in Green` on 23 occasions and was an integral part of their 2023 Rugby World Cup squad. Nevertheless, he subsequently found himself behind both Jack Crowley and Sam Prendergast in the team`s pecking order.
