British cyclist Simon Yates achieved a resounding overall victory in the Giro d`Italia on Sunday, marking him as the third rider from Great Britain to clinch the prestigious Grand Tour title, joining Chris Froome and Tao Geoghegan Hart in this elite group.
Yates secured the coveted pink jersey during Saturday`s penultimate stage, launching a decisive attack on the challenging 205km gravel climb spanning from Verres to Sestriere. His dominant performance led to a nearly four-minute lead over second-place finisher Isaac Del Toro, the 21-year-old Mexican who had impressively held the race lead for ten days prior to Yates`s ascendancy.
Entering the final Stage 21 with a commanding lead of almost four minutes, Yates safely crossed the finish line within the peloton. This victory marks his second Grand Tour triumph, following his success at the Spanish Vuelta in 2018.
Notably, Yates achieved this remarkable feat without securing a single stage victory, a rare occurrence last seen when Alberto Contador won the Giro d`Italia in 2015 under similar circumstances.
Prior to the ceremonial final stage in Rome, Yates and fellow competitors received blessings from Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican. The 32-year-old then safely completed the course, while his Visma-Lease a Bike teammate, Olav Kooij, sprinted to win the stage.
This victory holds particular significance for Yates, as it was on the challenging Colle delle Finestre – the very same mountain pass where he sealed his win this year – that his hopes for the 2018 Giro faltered. In that edition, he had worn the pink jersey for 13 days before succumbing to a decisive attack by Chris Froome.
His journey to this victory has seen its share of setbacks, including withdrawals from the Italian race in 2020 due to coronavirus and in 2022 because of a knee injury.
