British cyclist Simon Yates delivered an incredible performance on the penultimate stage of the Giro d`Italia, snatching the pink jersey from Isaac Del Toro and effectively securing his second Grand Tour title.
Yates, who previously won the Vuelta a España seven years ago, finished third in Saturday`s stage, trailing Chris Harper and Alessandro Verre. Nevertheless, his powerful solo attack completely nullified Del Toro`s overall lead.
Before the start of the 205km ride from Verres to Sestriere, where riders ascended 4,500 meters, Del Toro held an 81-second advantage. However, Yates surged dramatically ahead on the climb.
The Briton`s lead over Del Toro now stands at nearly four minutes, and barring any unforeseen incidents, he is set to be crowned champion after Sunday`s ceremonial ride in Rome. This makes Yates the third Briton to win the Giro, following Chris Froome and Tao Geoghegan Hart.
Yates “Speechless” After Closing a Difficult Chapter
Yates` hopes of winning the 2018 Giro were dashed on the very same mountain pass, Colle delle Finestre, where he claimed victory this year, following a breakaway by Froome.
The 32-year-old has now decisively overcome past setbacks, denying 21-year-old Mexican rider Del Toro the title in his debut Giro.
“When the route of the parcours was released, I always had in the back of my mind to try and do something here and close the chapter. I`m just still a bit speechless that I was able to do it.”
“The whole team has been fantastic throughout the entire race, and without Wout (Van Aert) in the valley and the rest of the team all day, it wouldn`t have been possible.”
“Maybe I looked relaxed this morning, but I had doubts I could do it. The guys encouraged me, believed in me, so thanks to them.”
“It`s unbelievable, I`m trying to find the words now, but words are failing me.”
