`Stormers

The Cape Town-based team is off to one of the best starts in the United Rugby Championship`s history.

Currently holding second place in the standings, the Stormers have commenced their season with two remarkable victories: a dominant 35-0 win over the formidable Leinster and a 26-10 triumph against Ospreys. Both these wins were forged upon a foundation of an ironclad, almost impenetrable defense. The “clean sheet” against Leinster, preventing them from scoring any points, is particularly impressive and a testament to their defensive prowess.

The Secret Weapon: Apprentice vs. Master

Defensive coach Norman Laker, with a touch of self-criticism, commented: “We made one or two changes during the offseason that have worked well in matches. Of course, we are still far from perfect.”

However, the result against Leinster held special significance for him. This is because his old friend and mentor, Jacques Nienaber, the former South Africa national team coach, now leads the Irish club`s defense. Nienaber was instrumental in laying the groundwork for the Stormers` defensive system back during the Rassie Erasmus era (2008-2014), a system that later became the cornerstone of the Springboks` two consecutive Rugby World Cup victories.

Laker added: “I was extremely pleased with how we started the match against Leinster. Jacques and I have always actively exchanged ideas, even when he was with the national team. We know each other`s defensive approaches inside out. Leinster is a magnificent attacking team, a champion, and one of the top three attacking sides in the league. So, keeping them scoreless was particularly satisfying.”

A Philosophy of Consistency: “We Won`t Adjust”

Despite the challenging European tour ahead, where the Stormers are set to play against Scarlets, Zebre, and Benetton, Laker remains confident in his system: “I won`t be arrogant, but we won`t adapt much to our opponents. We might make slight adjustments in certain areas, but our fundamental approach will not change. I know where they might pressure us, but that`s my responsibility to manage.”

He also acknowledged their upcoming opponents: “Scarlets have a good kicking game and refined actions in possession. Benetton is essentially the Italian national team; 80% of their squad are national players. During their tour of South Africa, they scored four tries against the Springboks at Loftus Versfeld. All three teams are filled with international players, so don`t expect any easy matches. However, we look forward with optimism.”

Reinforcements on the Horizon

The Stormers` tour will coincide with the much-anticipated return of key South African national team players. Cobus Reinach, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, and Damian Willemse are expected to rejoin the squad in Wales. While Laker has not yet confirmed if they will be in the starting lineup, their presence will be a significant boost in the quest for victory in these challenging away matches.

One thing is certain: with their impenetrable defense and unwavering confidence in their own system, the Stormers are ready to challenge any team in the championship and continue their impressive ascent.
