Lucas Digne Returns to PSG: "I'm Coming Back as a Man" Ready to Win Trophies

Ten years after his departure, Lucas Digne is officially back at Paris Saint-Germain. The 33-year-old French left-back, who has played for AS Roma, Barcelona, Everton, and Aston Villa, aims to leverage his experience to help the double European champions maintain their top position.

His first stint in Paris was not particularly memorable. Recruited from his formative club Lille, Lucas Digne spent three seasons with PSG between 2013 and 2016. However, the Meaux-born player, who made 44 appearances across all competitions, struggled to become indispensable, partly due to competition from Brazilian Maxwell and his own perceived timidity and neutral performances at the time.

A decade later, the left-back returns to Paris with a completely different status and is determined to enhance his history with the club from his native region. Seeking a quality backup for Nuno Mendes, the double European champions decided to sign Lucas Digne by activating his release clause at Aston Villa for less than 10 million euros. After a short vacation, the French international (64 caps), who featured as a starter in the 2026 World Cup, has signed with PSG until 2029, becoming the second summer signing after Maghnes Akliouche.

"I am very happy to be back. I am also impressed. The club has changed; it has taken on another dimension. It's truly incredible," Lucas Digne stated on the French champions' website. "I am coming back as a man. I am also different as a player. I have more maturity and experience, and I want to bring this experience to the group and win a lot of trophies. This club is built to win; it's part of its DNA. This group is extremely ambitious; it shows it year after year, and that's why everyone wants to play for Paris."

"You quickly feel at home"

Despite a mixed experience, the 33-year-old full-back, who has played for AS Roma, Barcelona, Everton, and Aston Villa, holds a positive memory of his first spell at PSG. "It was my introduction to the highest level and excellence. It shaped me as a player and as a man. I learned a lot alongside players like Zlatan Ibrahimović and Thiago Silva and won many trophies. It was a great story, and it had to continue being written. I can't wait to discover the group that has won two Champions Leagues."

While awaiting his return to the pitch at the Parc des Princes, "a stadium that sends shivers down your spine," Lucas Digne is preparing to integrate into a squad he already knows in part. "I look forward to reuniting with Marquinhos. We signed here at the same time, and now he is captain and has had an incredible journey; it's fabulous for him! I know Luis Enrique from Barcelona; we had a very good experience together. I can't wait to see my French national teammates again, but also other people I knew during my first spell, like the kit managers. It's very pleasant, and you quickly feel at home."

It remains to be seen when the new PSG number 12 will be ready to start his season. By coincidence of the schedule, the double Champions League winners will face Aston Villa in the UEFA Super Cup in Austria this Wednesday (9 PM), before heading to Lens on Saturday for the Trophée des Champions and hosting Stade Rennais on August 23rd for the Ligue 1 opener.
