Mourinho: New Real Madrid Signing Bernardo Silva Needs Fitness Improvement
Jose Mourinho has called for new Real Madrid acquisition Bernardo Silva to enhance his physical conditioning, noting that the midfielder returned for pre-season training in subpar shape.
Silva made his inaugural appearance for Los Blancos in their 2-1 friendly victory over Ferencvaros. This marked his debut for the Spanish club after joining on a free transfer upon the expiration of his contract with Manchester City.
The Portugal international entered the match as a halftime substitute in Budapest. However, Mourinho acknowledged that the 31-year-old player is still a considerable distance from reaching optimal fitness following his summer break.
"Bernardo is a vital player for us, but unfortunately, he's another who benefits from doing nothing during his holidays," Mourinho remarked. "It's good for him to rest completely during his time off, so he's come back in poor physical shape – he needs to improve."
Mourinho further elaborated on his tactical decision to alter Silva's position during the second half, moving him further up the field due to concerns about his stamina. "Bernardo is a tremendous player," he stated. "He can assist our build-up play if he plays deeper, as a No. 6 or a No. 8. However, during the game, I observed he was lacking a bit of physical strength, so I repositioned him to the No. 10 role. He is versatile and can play in three or four positions."
Madrid Secures Victory, But Work Remains
Goals from Mario Rivas and Carlos Espi secured the win for Real Madrid in Hungary, with Silva making his unofficial debut shortly after his arrival in the Spanish capital.
The midfielder expressed his satisfaction with getting his first minutes on the field and is confident he will be fully prepared by the time Madrid commences their La Liga campaign against Espanyol later this month.
"It's only the first week, but I am very happy," Silva told Real Madrid TV. "There are still many areas to improve, but the most crucial aspect is to build rhythm to start the season well. It has been a demanding first week, but I am delighted to have begun and to have made my debut for Madrid."
