This more traditional outlook, favoring aesthetically pleasing play over the sheer volume of goals, was particularly evident in his assessment of the Champions League semi-final clash between PSG and Bayern Munich last season.

Michel Platini admitted that "a beautiful defensive play, a great save by the goalkeeper, is as beautiful as a goal scored." Consequently, the former French captain preferred the 1-1 draw between PSG and Bayern in the Champions League semi-final, rather than the first leg, which was dubbed "the match of the century" (5-4).
