Cristian Romero's Farewell to Tottenham Ahead of Atletico Madrid Transfer

Cristian Romero has expressed his heartfelt goodbyes to Tottenham supporters, acknowledging that his five-year tenure in North London was not without its imperfections.

The Argentine international is reportedly on the verge of a move to Atletico Madrid, with the Spanish club having reportedly agreed on a fee of £34.2 million for the center-back.

Romero has been sidelined since sustaining a knee injury in April during a match against Sunderland. The defender displayed visible emotion as he left the field, with the injury subsequently ruling him out for Tottenham's final six Premier League fixtures.

His absence occurred during a critical period when Tottenham was fighting against relegation. He also faced some criticism from segments of the fanbase for initially intending to return to Argentina for a crucial match for his former club, Belgrano, before Spurs' decisive final game of the season.

Ultimately, Romero remained in England and was present at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to witness his team secure Premier League survival with a 1-0 victory over Everton, marking their second consecutive 17th-place finish.

In a touching message shared on social media, Romero reflected on his time with the club:

"I know I wasn't perfect," he wrote.

"But I can leave knowing I always gave everything. I wore this shirt with pride and fought for it with all my heart."

"When I arrived, I had one goal: to leave my mark on this club," Romero added.

"I knew that could only happen through hard work, sacrifice, and by achieving something people had been waiting for for a long time – winning a trophy. Together, we managed to do that.

"I’m leaving Tottenham, but a part of me will always stay here. I came here as a player and I’m leaving feeling like one of you.

"Thank you for everything."

Romero joined Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021 and quickly became an integral part of the team's defense, accumulating 156 appearances across all competitions.

The pinnacle of his time at the club was in 2025 when he was instrumental in ending Spurs' 17-year trophy drought by defeating Manchester United in the Europa League final.
