Liverpool reportedly agree loan deal for Barcelona defender Araujo

Liverpool have reportedly secured a loan agreement with Barcelona for the acquisition of defender Ronald Araujo, as per reports from Fabrizio Romano. A verbal understanding has been achieved between the clubs, endorsed by Barcelona's sporting director Deco, with the loan package including an option to purchase the player outright.

Personal terms between Araujo and Liverpool are also understood to have been settled. This potential transfer is a direct response to a significant defensive injury crisis faced by new manager Andoni Iraola, leaving the team with severely limited options at the start of the Premier League season.

Adding to their woes, Ibrahima Konate departed for Real Madrid on a free transfer upon contract expiry. Jeremy Jacquet, who was signed from Rennes for £55 million, is still recovering from a shoulder injury. Giovanni Leoni, brought in to be a long-term defensive partner for Virgil van Dijk, suffered an ACL tear and is expected to miss the initial months of the campaign. Joe Gomez also experienced another setback during a pre-season friendly against Sunderland.

Consequently, Liverpool finds itself in a position with virtually no fit and available senior center-backs in the immediate term, making the Araujo deal a crucial emergency measure.

Liverpool seeks experienced reinforcement

The Uruguayan international, aged 27 and standing at 6ft 3in, has been at Camp Nou for seven seasons since his arrival from Boston River in 2018. During his tenure with the Catalan club, he amassed 162 appearances across all competitions, securing two La Liga titles in the 2022-23 and 2024-25 seasons. He has also demonstrated his versatility by playing at right-back when needed.

However, his role at Barcelona saw a notable decline last season. He started only 11 of his 24 La Liga appearances, with Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, and Gerard Martin being favored at various points. Despite contributing three goals from set pieces, he ultimately lost his guaranteed starting position under manager Hansi Flick.

Injury has been a recurring issue throughout Araujo's Barcelona career. He sustained a severe adductor tendon injury in September 2022, which ruled him out of the World Cup in Qatar. Further injuries include a knee problem at the end of last season, an ankle injury in February 2025, and an illness-related absence in November 2025.
