West Ham United signs Celtic midfielder Arne Engels for record-breaking £22 million

West Ham United has completed a landmark signing, bringing in Celtic midfielder Arne Engels for £22 million. This transfer establishes a new EFL Championship transfer record. The Belgian international has committed to a five-year contract with the Hammers, who are preparing for their first season in the second tier since 2012 after their relegation from the Premier League.

The reported fee of £22 million surpasses the previous Championship record of £17.5 million, which Ipswich Town paid for Norway international Sindre Walle Egeli last summer. However, Engels will not be available for West Ham's opening-day fixture away at Burnley, meaning his debut is likely to be against Charlton Athletic at the London Stadium on August 22.

The 22-year-old joins West Ham after a successful two-season spell at Celtic, where he contributed to consecutive Scottish Premiership titles. Throughout his time with the Glasgow club, Engels made 100 appearances, scoring 17 goals and providing 22 assists. He initially joined Celtic from Augsburg in August 2024, having previously come through the academy at Club Brugge.

Engels' arrival caps a busy summer for West Ham

Engels is West Ham's fourth acquisition of the summer, following the signings of Venezuelan midfielder Keiber Lamadrid, Dutch defender Joel Veltman, and Israeli winger Manor Solomon. Nils Koppen, West Ham's director of player recruitment, expressed his confidence that Engels possesses the qualities the club seeks as they aim for an immediate return to the Premier League.

"Arne is someone we have followed for some time and identified as a key target," Koppen stated on the club's official website. "Despite his age, he already has considerable experience and has shown that he can perform consistently at a major club. He has the qualities, both on the pitch and as a person, that we want as we build for the future."

Engels, who has earned four caps for Belgium, is eager to embrace the challenge of helping West Ham secure promotion back to the top flight. "It's a really exciting project to be part of," he commented. "The main objective is to get back to the Premier League. That's what everyone wants. Now it's down to me to help the team achieve that, and hopefully, we can have a really good season together with the supporters."
